How Often Should You Service Your Car in Kenya?

The service schedule in your owner's manual was written for a car driving in European or Japanese conditions. In Kenya, between dust, stop-start Nairobi traffic, variable fuel quality and longer idling times, those intervals are often too optimistic. Here's a more realistic guide that extends engine life without overservicing.

Oil and filter

For most petrol vehicles we recommend changing oil and filter every 5,000 km rather than the 10,000–15,000 km some manuals suggest. Diesel vehicles pulling turbos should stay closer to 5,000 km as well. If you sit in heavy traffic daily, shorter intervals protect the engine.

Air filter & cabin filter

  • Air filter: inspect every service, replace every 15,000–20,000 km — sooner in dusty areas.
  • Cabin filter: replace every 20,000 km or once a year, especially before rainy season.

Brakes

Nairobi driving is hard on brakes. Expect front pad life of 25,000–40,000 km depending on driving style. Discs often last two sets of pads. Have them inspected at every oil change — it's a two-minute check that prevents a much bigger failure.

Battery

Most car batteries in Kenya last 2–3 years. Heat is the biggest killer, not cold. Have yours load-tested once a year after the 18-month mark — especially before a long trip.

Suspension

Kenyan road conditions accelerate wear on bushings, ball joints and shock absorbers. Plan on a full suspension inspection every 20,000 km. Shocks typically last 60,000–80,000 km but potholes can shorten that dramatically.

Timing belt vs timing chain

If your car has a timing belt, replace it between 80,000 and 100,000 km or every 5 years, whichever comes first. Timing chains are 'lifetime' on paper but in reality should be inspected after 150,000 km — a stretched chain can destroy an engine.

Annual big inspection

Once a year we recommend a full bumper-to-bumper inspection — diagnostics scan, fluid check, brake check, suspension check, tyre condition, battery load test and body condition. It takes an hour or two and it's the single best thing you can do for your car's long-term reliability.

Servicing isn't a cost — it's an investment against a bigger repair bill later.
